Bonding

The resin is hardened through the light treatment and then dentist can both shape and polish the bonded area to correct the chip or cracked tooth. This is a very common procedure and is an attractive form of cosmetic dentistry in that it may only require one visit to the dentist and is relatively inexpensive as compared to other cosmetic dentistry options.

Veneers

When the tooth that requires some dental attention is still healthy, a dental veneer may be used to correct the issue. Veneers are simply a shell for the tooth that are custom-shaped to the tooth with a porcelain or resin composite.

The procedure does require more than one visit to the dentist because the initial visit will enable the dentist to get the impression needed for the veneer to be created and formed. The second visit is required to then place the permanent veneer over the tooth.

Crown

Crowns are very common and used in cases of a cracked tooth or a tooth showing some weakening. Coronavirus (COVID-19) is providing us with a new and different connotation of the phrase “global reach”. The news is alarming and we as a global community are experiencing fear and anxiety over what feels like an uncontrollable situation. So, what are we as one person, one community, one business, one family to do when a global situation knocks on our front door and creates a barricade between ourselves and all personal human interaction?

The word pandemic in and of itself is terrifying. Thesaurus.com tells me I can substitute epidemic, contagion, sickness, disease, illness, plaque, epidemic, deadly disease, virulent disease . Wow, now I can’t breathe due to anxiety. Anxiety: apprehension, angst, fear, worry. These are all words I can use to describe the emotions running through me.

As Americans, we are not easily swayed, but we are determined when we need to be. Many also have an overwhelming need to be purposeful.

What can we, as individuals, do to combat our anxiety and frustration over a virus controlling our every thought and action?

By now we all know we need to wash our hands frequently, sanitize high-touch surfaces, avoid sick people, maintain a six-foot social distance from others, make sure you have a decent supply of nonperishable food and other essentials, and stay home as much as possible.

But there has to be more that we can do to help ourselves and others as we strive to gain control during this unprecedented situation. I would like to offer a few ideas.

Give Blood

The American Red Cross is asking for blood donations because they are preparing for a possible shortage. Order take-out food from your favorite restaurant.

Reach Out to Neighbors Near and Far

Check on an elderly neighbor and have a local restaurant deliver them a meal.

Reach out to nursing homes, military personnel, and to people who live alone by sending them cards.

Connect Virtually

Connect through Google Hangouts, ZOOM, FaceTime, Skype or other video conferencing apps.

Invite a family member, friend, or neighbor to virtually dine w/ your family. Set a place at the dinner table for them.

Invite friends to a virtual get-together. Social distancing isn’t a reality within the virtual world.

Thank medical workers for their patience, perseverance, and education.

Recognize all first responders-police, fire, & ambulatory for their commitment to bringing their A-game to each and every emergent situation.

The year 2020 will be remembered as the year everyone had to stay home to stay safe. Toothaches and dental emergencies do not know there is a global pandemic happening and that dentist offices have been mandated to clear their in-office appointments.

The 16th-century proverb, “Necessity is the mother of invention,” rings especially true as we face new ways to live a social existence in a socially distant world. The Covid-19 has forced us to adapt to a different way of conducting our lives and our businesses. In the dental industry that means we need to find another way to see patients and help them through emergency situations when scheduling an office visit is not a viable option. Luckily 2020 also means remote technology-driven healthcare has spread its tentacles into the oral health field in the form of Teledentistry.

What is Teledentistry?

Teledentistry (also called virtual dental care) allows the patient and clinician to come together via a HIPAA-compliant live video conference in real-time, from any location.The experience is similar to Skype, Zoom, FaceTime, or WebEx.

How does it work?

Scheduling a teledentistry appointment can be done by calling the dentist office, scheduling online through the website or texting the emergency number on the website. Your dentist will create a link to connect to a face-to-face virtual appointment. The link is emailed or texted back to the patient. The patient clicks the link at the scheduled time and they are transported into a virtual waiting room until the dentist opens the virtual door and invites them into the chat room. The dentist has the opportunity to look at the patient’s history/chart before talking with the patient.

When can Teledentistry be helpful?

Teledentistry appointments are helpful for patients who are experiencing a toothache, pain, swelling, cracked tooth, loose tooth, abscess, lost filling, broken denture, or a temporary crown becomes loose or fell off. A dentist can often relieve patient anxiety while directing the next step to their relief. Teledentistry eliminates the need for unnecessary exposure during this coronavirus outbreak while still giving patients access to their dentist. It also helps patients avoid hospital emergency rooms as the dentist can triage the patient.

The COVID 19 Journey - New Safety Measures for Dental Visits

Anxiety seems to be at an all-time high as 2020 becomes the year a global pandemic stopped our world from spinning. Within a three month period, we have gone from hugging our friends and family, shaking hands with people we have just met and congregating with large groups, to wearing face masks in public, standing 6 feet away from others, washing our hands a hundred times a day and for many, not going out in public at all. It is easy to see how anxiety can dictate every step we take. As businesses begin to reopen, owners have the added responsibilities of making sure their patrons are safe and feel secure when in their care. What does that mean for dental offices as they begin to reopen their doors? How does a business that primarily concentrates on the inside of their patient’s mouth make sure their patients and their staff feel protected and secure during a global pandemic?

Our world has changed, but just because beautiful smiles are covered by a face mask doesn’t mean teeth require less attention. Dr. Bryan Hoertdoerfer (Dr. H.) owner of Hoertdoerfer Dentistry , and a leader in dental technologies has been using personal protective equipment (PPE), sterilized equipment, and high-volume suction long before COVID 19 was a common word. COVID 19 is our reality and dental patients need to know the steps they can expect from their dental professionals.

“The most powerful thing we can do right now is to educate ourselves on infectious diseases, understand how they spread, and then take that knowledge and apply it to ensure our dental office is as safe as possible to protect our most valuable assets; our patients and our staff,” Dr. Bryan Hoertdoerfer.

Protecting Staff and Patients:

Dr. Hoertdoerfer has researched the most effective new protocols, measures, PPE, and the new guidelines issued by the American Dental Association (ADA), The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Hoertdoerfer Dentistry’s enhanced protocol for team members includes attending Infectious disease awareness and prevention programs designed to enhance knowledge and preparedness, daily temperature checks and wellness questionnaire to ensure their personal health before working with patients and expanded his team's personal protection equipment (PPE). The dental team will be covered from head to toe with an additional layer of disposable protective coats, hats, and shoes to stop the absorption and the spread of dangerous particles. The clinical team will add FDA approved face shields.

“The caring smiles of our clinical team – dentists, hygienists, and assistants – will be protected behind double-masking N95/KN96 and ASTM level 3 face masks at all times. Even our friendly administrative team will be wearing ASTM Level 3 masks,” Dr. Bryan Hoertdoerfer.

Scheduling Patient Appointments:

Appointments will be managed to allow for social distancing and sanitizing between patients. The office staff will reach out to all patients who have had to reschedule appointments. Patients are encouraged to schedule multiple procedures within one visit. Families are also welcome to schedule their appointments together and make the visit feel like their own private family dental experience. Patients are welcome to use the secure, patient communications portal for scheduling consultations and follow-up visits

“We want to add an additional layer of peace-of-mind to our mature and medically concerned patients so we have designated specific hours for at-risk appointments within our morning schedules,” Dr. Bryan Hoertdoerfer

Patient Experience:

Checking-in to an appointment will change as patients use their vehicles as a Virtual Waiting Room, and text/call the office to let the staff know they have arrived. The office staff will let patients know when to come in.

A new transparent plastic guard has been placed at the reception area to block the movement of airborne particles. The reception area has fewer chairs, no magazines, and helpful signs to guide through the one-way traffic.

A member of the dental team will take the temperature of each patient using a contactless thermometer and each patient will be asked to thoroughly disinfect their hands before entering the clinical area of our practice using our new hand sanitizing station. Patients with a fever will be kindly asked to reschedule at a time when they are feeling better.

In the operatory chair, patients will be asked to rinse for 1 minute with 1.5% Hydrogen Peroxide prior to treatment.

Accommodating Emergency Issues Through Teledentistry:

Hoertdoerfer Dentistry is proud to offer Teledentistry appointments. Teledentistry allows the dental team to come together with the patient through a HIPAA compliant live video conference. Patients can schedule a teledentistry appointment and speak face-to-face with a member of our dental staff to discuss their emergent dental issue. This is particularly convenient for patients who travel a long distance for an in-office appointment.

The Office Experience:

Hoertdoerfer Dentistry has always prided themselves on their super clean office as they have always thoroughly wiped, sanitized, and disinfected all instruments, equipment, and surfaces in each operatory after every patient.

“We use our CDC-Approved Instrument Sterilization as a part of our standard procedure at all times. Anything that goes near your mouth is heat and pressure cleaned between every use,” Dr. Bryan Hoertdoerfer.

They have added a High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) Filtration system to remove 99.97% of airborne particles less than .3 micrometers, new air purification units, new self-contained water filtration systems in each operatory, and advanced chairside high-volume evacuation. A hypochlorous acid air fogger, a natural substance white blood cells produce, will be used after every appointment and throughout the entire office at the end of each day.
