Do Crowns Offer Lifelong Protection from Further Tooth Decay?
Dental crowns are an incredible solution for restoring damaged teeth—but do they last forever? And more importantly, can they prevent future tooth decay for life?
Let’s break it down.
What Does a Crown Actually Do?
A crown is like a protective cap that covers a weakened or damaged tooth. It restores the tooth’s shape, strength, and appearance, and shields it from further wear. Crowns are commonly used after root canals, to protect large fillings, or to restore broken or heavily decayed teeth.
Can a Crown Prevent Future Decay?
Crowns do protect the part of the tooth they cover—but they aren’t a permanent shield against decay. Here’s why:
- Decay can still happen at the margin—where the crown meets your natural tooth. If plaque builds up along that gumline, bacteria can sneak in and cause decay underneath.
- Gum health matters—Receding gums can expose parts of the tooth not protected by the crown.
- Daily habits make a difference—Brushing, flossing, and regular dental visits are still essential.
How Long Do Crowns Last?
With excellent care, crowns can last 10–15 years or longer. Some patients keep them even longer! But like anything else, they can wear down, loosen, or be affected by changes in your bite or oral health.
